Although neuromuscular complications of COVID-19 have not received as much publicity as stroke complications, they are being increasingly reported. Guillain-Barré syndrome, a severe life-threatening paralyzing neuropathy that is a complication of many viral infections, has now been seen in COVID-19 patients in many countries.
Since the pandemic hit, 27 cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome stemming from the virus have been reported worldwide. Three of the cases were a variant of GBS, the Miller Fisher variant.
GBS cases were reported in Austria, China, France, Germany, Italy, Iran, Morocco, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey and the U.S. Italy and the U.S. had the most reported cases, with 10 and four, respectively. The mean age of the patients was 59.8; 63 percent were male. Forty-four percent of the patients – or 12 – had to be ventilated.

In the first clinical trial of its kind in the United States, physicians at the University of Alabama at Birmingham are testing a treatment to halt the potentially fatal immune over-reaction known as cytokine storm syndrome in patients with COVID-19.

Reports from China and elsewhere indicate that patients critically ill from COVID-19 often have elevated levels of the immune-signaling molecules (cytokines) interleukin 6 (IL-6) and interleukin–1 beta (IL-1b).
There are FDA-approved drugs to reduce both IL-6 and IL-1-beta levels in the context of autoimmune diseases. Early reports have shown that anti-IL-6 treatment has generated favorable outcomes.

Pianka then displayed a slide showing rows of human skulls, one of which had red lights flashing from its eye sockets.
AIDS is not an efficient killer, he explained, because it is too slow. His favorite candidate for eliminating 90 percent of the world’s population is airborne Ebola ( Ebola Reston ), because it is both highly lethal and it kills in days, instead of years. However, Professor Pianka did not mention that Ebola victims die a slow and torturous death as the virus initiates a cascade of biological calamities inside the victim that eventually liquefy the internal organs.
Then came the question and answer session, in which Professor Pianka stated that other diseases are also efficient killers.
The audience laughed when he said, “You know, the bird flu’s good, too.” They laughed again when he proposed, with a discernable note of glee in his voice that, “We need to sterilize everybody on the Earth.”
He spoke glowingly of the police state in China that enforces their one-child policy. He said, “Smarter people have fewer kids.”
The syndrome of social problems commonly called “overpopulation” is actually caused by poverty. Therefore, the problem cannot be solved by forcing people to restrict their fertility.

Jun 09, 2020: The U.S. Supreme Court redefined what for decades federal and state prosecutors thought had been “Indian Country” in eastern Oklahoma when it comes to crime enforcement jurisdictional purposes.
The court upheld challenges from two American Indians who claimed criminal cases prosecuted against them in state court should have been tried in federal court because Congress never disestablished the 19th century boundaries of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation reservation.
The decisions mean Oklahoma prosecutors lack the authority to pursue charges against American Indian defendants in much of eastern Oklahoma, including the city of Tulsa. It also throws into question the convictions of hundreds of American Indian defendants.
Crimes not involving American Indians will continue to be prosecuted in state courts.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday redefined what for decades federal and state prosecutors thought had been “Indian Country” in eastern Oklahoma when it comes to crime enforcement jurisdictional purposes.
The court upheld challenges from two American Indians who claimed criminal cases prosecuted against them in state court should have been tried in federal court because Congress never disestablished the 19th century boundaries of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation reservation.
The decisions mean Oklahoma prosecutors lack the authority to pursue charges against American Indian defendants in much of eastern Oklahoma, including the city of Tulsa. It also throws into question the convictions of hundreds of American Indian defendants.

Israeli businessman Dan Gertler, has circumvented US sanctions leveled against him by making use of an international money laundering network, two groups claimed Thursday. Gertler has been under sanctions by the US State Department since December 2017 for having signed “opaque and corrupt mining and oil contracts.”
Controversial billionaire Dan Gertler appears to have used a money laundering network stretching from Democratic Republic of Congo to Europe and Israel to evade US sanctions against him, funnel millions of dollars abroad, and acquire new mining assets in DRC.”
Gertler bypassed the sanctions through shell companies, according to the investigation: “In total, between June 2018 and May 2019, at least $100 million flowed through bank accounts associated with this network.”
Among the various transactions revealed today, at least $21 million was sent to unknown accounts held outside DRC and $25 million was sent to DRC’s controversial state-owned mining company Gécamines.
In the report’s conclusion, the two groups encouraged the Congolese government to “freeze the assets” of the Israeli billionaire in the DRC.

Strong prices have fueled the boom. Western investors want gold so they can diversify their portfolios; India and China want it for jewelry. But most Western companies – and the banks that finance them – avoid handling non-industrial African gold directly.

Five men detained as suspected conspirators | About eight hours after terrorists struck Manhattan’s tallest skyscrapers, police in Bergen County detained five men who they said were found carrying maps linking them to the blasts.
The five men, who were in a van stopped on Route 3 in East Rutherford around 4:30 p.m., were being questioned by police but had not been charged with any crime late Tuesday. The Bergen County Police bomb squad X-rayed packages found inside the van but did not find any explosives, authorities said.
However, sources close to the investigation said they found other evidence linking the men to the bombing plot.
“There are maps of the city in the car with certain places highlighted,” the source said. “It looked like they’re hooked in with this. It looked like they knew what was going to happen when they were at Liberty State Park.”
Sources also said that bomb-sniffing dogs reacted as if they had detected explosives, although officers were unable to find anything. The FBI seized the van for further testing, authorities said.
Sources close to the investigation said the men said they were Israeli tourists, but police had not been able to confirm their identities. Authorities would not release their names.
East Rutherford officers stopped the van after the FBI’s Newark Field Office broadcast an alert asking surrounding police departments to look for a white Chevrolet van, police said.
Sources said the FBI alert, known as a BOLO or “Be On Lookout,” was sent out at 3:31 p.m.
It read:
“Vehicle possibly related to New York terrorist attack. White, 2000 Chevrolet van with New Jersey registration with ‘Urban Moving Systems’ sign on back seen at Liberty State Park, Jersey City, NJ, at the time of first impact of jetliner into World Trade Center.
“Three individuals with van were seen celebrating after initial impact and subsequent explosion. FBI Newark Field Office requests that, if the van is located, hold for prints and detain individuals.”
Business records show an Urban Moving Systems with offices on West 50th Street in Manhattan and on West 18th Street in Weehawken. Telephone messages left at the businesses Tuesday evening were not immediately returned.
Business records show the owner as Dominik Suter of Fair Lawn. A woman answering the telephone at Suter’s home acknowledged he owned the company but refused to comment further. She also declined to identify herself.
A business traveler staying at the Homestead Studio Suites Hotel said she watched state troopers drive the suspects away in a procession of state police cars about 5 p.m.
The woman, who asked not to be identified, said the people detained appeared to be white men.

BBC News is reporting that a doctor and his colleagues in the southern African country of Botswana have found more than 350 elephant carcasses since the beginning of May.
“To be able to see and count that many in a three-hour flight was extraordinary,” McCann told the BBC. “This it totally unprecedented in terms of numbers of elephants dying in a single event unrelated to drought.”
According to the report, Botswana’s government in May ruled out poaching as a reason for the massive number of deaths.

While many great voices of the Civil Rights Movement were Jews, that is where the good part of this story ends. Historically, the Jewish attitude toward Black people has been nothing short of a disaster.

Comedian Chelsea Handler has apologized for posting a video clip of the anti-Semitic Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan on her Instagram account.
She had defended leaving up the post — from a Farrakhan appearance on “The Phil Donahue Show,” once a popular talk show, on the topic of racial prejudice — for several days.
But Handler, who is Jewish, later deleted the clip and sent an email apology to the Daily Beast.
“I thought [Farrakhan’s] message was really powerful…I wasn’t thinking about the anti-Semitic thing, but I don’t want to take down the post because I felt the message was powerful and a lot of people did…So whatever, you know, everybody (who is complaining about it) can go f*** themselves.”
Actress Jessica Chastain also shared the Farrakhan clip, later deleting it with no explanation. Celebrity likes included Jennifer Aniston, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jennifer Garner.
If Jews care so much about the Other, as many well meaning Jews insist upon telling us, how come all this caring disappears once Farrakhan, Davis, Dieudonne or I appear on the scene?

Black liberation is the key to unlocking all others to obtain the equality they deserve. Rather than counting on solidarity, authentic Black Liberationists must shape our own fate by UNAPOLOGETICALLY defining our priorities. In fact, this is exactly what is so unique about Farrakhan and Dieudonne; it is likely why Jewish organisations see them as prime enemies and invest so highly in their destruction.
It seems black lives don’t matter quite so much, now that we’ve got to the hard bit.
Many who were quick to support Black Lives Matter protests are fading away as it becomes clear what real change demands.
Before protest there is a oppression, lack of popular support, and the hard work of awareness-raising. After that comes the high-octane action, the moral clarity – and allies hop on board. But once the first blood rush of protest subsides, the people who are still on the streets are mocked by their erstwhile allies, impatient to find fault with the movement and get back to their lives without any further disruption. What was universally celebrated a few weeks ago is now faintly embarrassing: too radical, too combative, almost comically unrealistic. You might think of the trajectory of the Black Lives Matter protests so far as like that famous quote misattributed to Gandhi, but this time in reverse: first you win, then they fight you, then they laugh at you, then they ignore you.
Everyone is on board with the principle, but when it comes to the change that is required, the idealistic passengers the movement picked up along the way suddenly come down with a case of extreme pragmatism.
Part of the reason for their belated reluctance is that the course of actual change is unflashy. After the first moment passes, the supportive ally has nothing to show for their continued backing for the cause: there are no public high-fives for your continuing solidarity. You can’t post it, you can’t hashtag it; most of the time you can’t even do it without jeopardising something, whether that’s your income, status, job prospects or even friendships.
But the main reason for the ebbing support is that change is just hard. If it wasn’t, the long arc of history that allegedly bends towards justice would be a very short one. And change is supposed to be hard. It is supposed to be political.
Movements such as Black Lives Matter aren’t hobbies or social clubs or edgy pop culture moments to be accessorised with. Change is supposed to have an agenda, otherwise it’s just a trend.

Vitamin D Production after UVB Exposure Depends on Baseline Vitamin D and Total Cholesterol but Not on Skin Pigmentation
ABSTRACT
UVB radiation increases serum vitamin D level expressed as 25-hydroxyvitamin-D3 (25(OH)D), but the influence of skin pigmentation, baseline 25(OH)D level, and total cholesterol has not been well characterized. To determine the importance of skin pigmentation, baseline 25(OH)D level, and total cholesterol on 25(OH)D production after UVB exposure, 182 persons were screened for 25(OH)D level. A total of 50 participants with a wide range in baseline 25(OH)D levels were selected to define the importance of baseline 25(OH)D level. Of these, 28 non-sun worshippers with limited past sun exposure were used to investigate the influence of skin pigmentation and baseline total cholesterol. The participants had 24% of their skin exposed to UVB (3 standard erythema doses) four times every second or third day. Skin pigmentation and 25(OH)D levels were measured before and after the irradiations. Total cholesterol was measured at baseline. The Evolution of Light Skin Color: Role of Vitamin D Disputed
Vitamin D is essential for calcium and phosphorus homeostasis and for the growth, development, and structural integrity of the skeleton. Over 90% of the body’s requirements for vitamin D derive from cutaneous photosynthesis, with dietary sources accounting for the remainder.
Severe vitamin D deficiency causes nutritional rickets in children and adolescents, and osteomalacia and osteoporosis in adults.
Rickets is a sunlight deprivation disease, which emerged on an epidemic scale during the industrial revolution, when cities in Europe and North America were enveloped in a perpetual twilightlike haze of coal smoke.
By the end of the 19th century, up to 90% of children in these centers suffered from rickets.
WHY THE VITAMIN D HYPOTHESIS IS FLAWED

(1977), who noted that groups of Asian, West Indian, and European adolescents with vitamin D deficiency and living in England showed marked and comparable increases respectively in serum 25-OHD concentrations during the spring and summer months (March to October).
