It seems black lives don’t matter quite so much, now that we’ve got to the hard bit.
Many who were quick to support Black Lives Matter protests are fading away as it becomes clear what real change demands.
Before protest there is a oppression, lack of popular support, and the hard work of awareness-raising. After that comes the high-octane action, the moral clarity – and allies hop on board. But once the first blood rush of protest subsides, the people who are still on the streets are mocked by their erstwhile allies, impatient to find fault with the movement and get back to their lives without any further disruption. What was universally celebrated a few weeks ago is now faintly embarrassing: too radical, too combative, almost comically unrealistic. You might think of the trajectory of the Black Lives Matter protests so far as like that famous quote misattributed to Gandhi, but this time in reverse: first you win, then they fight you, then they laugh at you, then they ignore you.
Everyone is on board with the principle, but when it comes to the change that is required, the idealistic passengers the movement picked up along the way suddenly come down with a case of extreme pragmatism.
Part of the reason for their belated reluctance is that the course of actual change is unflashy. After the first moment passes, the supportive ally has nothing to show for their continued backing for the cause: there are no public high-fives for your continuing solidarity. You can’t post it, you can’t hashtag it; most of the time you can’t even do it without jeopardising something, whether that’s your income, status, job prospects or even friendships.
But the main reason for the ebbing support is that change is just hard. If it wasn’t, the long arc of history that allegedly bends towards justice would be a very short one. And change is supposed to be hard. It is supposed to be political.
Movements such as Black Lives Matter aren’t hobbies or social clubs or edgy pop culture moments to be accessorised with. Change is supposed to have an agenda, otherwise it’s just a trend.

Vitamin D Production after UVB Exposure Depends on Baseline Vitamin D and Total Cholesterol but Not on Skin Pigmentation
ABSTRACT
UVB radiation increases serum vitamin D level expressed as 25-hydroxyvitamin-D3 (25(OH)D), but the influence of skin pigmentation, baseline 25(OH)D level, and total cholesterol has not been well characterized. To determine the importance of skin pigmentation, baseline 25(OH)D level, and total cholesterol on 25(OH)D production after UVB exposure, 182 persons were screened for 25(OH)D level. A total of 50 participants with a wide range in baseline 25(OH)D levels were selected to define the importance of baseline 25(OH)D level. Of these, 28 non-sun worshippers with limited past sun exposure were used to investigate the influence of skin pigmentation and baseline total cholesterol. The participants had 24% of their skin exposed to UVB (3 standard erythema doses) four times every second or third day. Skin pigmentation and 25(OH)D levels were measured before and after the irradiations. Total cholesterol was measured at baseline. The increase in 25(OH)D level after UVB exposure was negatively correlated with baseline 25(OH)D level (Po0.001) and positively correlated with baseline total cholesterol level (P1⁄40.005), but no significant correlations were found with constitutive or facultative skin pigmentation. The Evolution of Light Skin Color: Role of Vitamin D Disputed
Vitamin D is essential for calcium and phosphorus homeostasis and for the growth, development, and structural integrity of the skeleton. Over 90% of the body’s requirements for vitamin D derive from cutaneous photosynthesis, with dietary sources accounting for the remainder.
Severe vitamin D deficiency causes nutritional rickets in children and adolescents, and osteomalacia and osteoporosis in adults.
Rickets is a sunlight deprivation disease, which emerged on an epidemic scale during the industrial revolution, when cities in Europe and North America were enveloped in a perpetual twilightlike haze of coal smoke.
By the end of the 19th century, up to 90% of children in these centers suffered from rickets.
WHY THE VITAMIN D HYPOTHESIS IS FLAWED
The hypothesis was initially predicated on data from the 1920s and 1930s, which showed that blacks in the United States had a twofold to threefold increase over whites in the prevalence of clinical rickets. (Editorial: Likely because that’s who was predominantly working in the coalmines.)

These experiments with simulated sunlight were confirmed in the natural setting by Ellis et al. (1977), who noted that groups of Asian, West Indian, and European adolescents with vitamin D deficiency and living in England showed marked and comparable increases respectively in serum 25-OHD concentrations during the spring and summer months (March to October). Southern Jews who adhered to the social norms mostly were spared anti-Semitism, which race more important than religion, for Jews being white, led to increased social acceptance and minimal anti-Semitism.
In America with the promise of religious freedom, race as opposed to religion divided society and nowhere was that more true in the South were slavery reign and even the poorest of whites saw their social status rise by virtue of their whiteness.
Supporting the slavery and then the Confederacy was ticket to that acceptance for Jews living in the South and they took advantage of everything their whiteness could offer them in America.
