‘It doesn’t make sense’: Oakland small businesses hit again by vandals, cleanup underway | A handful of Oakland businesses on Telegraph Avenue were broken into Friday evening and security footage captured a group of vandals setting fires on the street. Store owners were preparing to reopen amid the pandemic, instead, they had to clean the mess.
Nearby, employees at the Kelly Moore store were scraping paint off the floor after vandals broke in, looted and dumped paint inside and out.
“Basically they vandalized the street and sidewalk, broke our glass, inside destroyed,” said manager Mark Lavato.
At least a half dozen businesses were shoveling shattered glass, including nonprofit East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse, which proudly supports recent marches and demonstrations.
“I know there’s a lot of anger out there, it’s understandable and forgivable,” said board President Mary Miller.

The Anti-Defamation League is advising cops to plant undercover agents among antifa activists, and to film protests where the group may clash with neo-Nazis and white supremacists.
“Police should capture as much as possible of the event on video, for use in any future arrests or prosecutions,” the ADL recommends in the document, posted on its website Wednesday. “Some departments also place undercover officers in the crowds, to spot suspects and/or to be in a position to assist if a fight breaks out.”
