Vitamin D Production after UVB Exposure Depends on Baseline Vitamin D and Total Cholesterol but Not on Skin Pigmentation

ABSTRACT

UVB radiation increases serum vitamin D level expressed as 25-hydroxyvitamin-D3 (25(OH)D), but the influence of skin pigmentation, baseline 25(OH)D level, and total cholesterol has not been well characterized. To determine the importance of skin pigmentation, baseline 25(OH)D level, and total cholesterol on 25(OH)D production after UVB exposure, 182 persons were screened for 25(OH)D level. A total of 50 participants with a wide range in baseline 25(OH)D levels were selected to define the importance of baseline 25(OH)D level. Of these, 28 non-sun worshippers with limited past sun exposure were used to investigate the influence of skin pigmentation and baseline total cholesterol. The participants had 24% of their skin exposed to UVB (3 standard erythema doses) four times every second or third day. Skin pigmentation and 25(OH)D levels were measured before and after the irradiations. Total cholesterol was measured at baseline. The increase in 25(OH)D level after UVB exposure was negatively correlated with baseline 25(OH)D level (Po0.001) and positively correlated with baseline total cholesterol level (P1⁄40.005), but no significant correlations were found with constitutive or facultative skin pigmentation. The Evolution of Light Skin Color: Role of Vitamin D Disputed

Vitamin D is essential for calcium and phosphorus homeostasis and for the growth, development, and structural integrity of the skeleton. Over 90% of the body’s requirements for vitamin D derive from cutaneous photosynthesis, with dietary sources accounting for the remainder.

Severe vitamin D deficiency causes nutritional rickets in children and adolescents, and osteomalacia and osteoporosis in adults.

Rickets is a sunlight deprivation disease, which emerged on an epidemic scale during the industrial revolution, when cities in Europe and North America were enveloped in a perpetual twilightlike haze of coal smoke.

By the end of the 19th century, up to 90% of children in these centers suffered from rickets.

WHY THE VITAMIN D HYPOTHESIS IS FLAWED

The hypothesis was initially predicated on data from the 1920s and 1930s, which showed that blacks in the United States had a twofold to threefold increase over whites in the prevalence of clinical rickets. (Editorial: Likely because that’s who was predominantly working in the coalmines.)

The hypothesis is weakened, however, because this epidermal melanin barrier is not absolute; it is surmountable provided that the UVB doses or the irradiation exposure times are increased according to the degree of pigmenta- tion. For example, a sixfold increase in either of these variables brought vitamin D production in highly melanized skin in line with that of lightly pigmented skin.

These experiments with simulated sunlight were confirmed in the natural setting by Ellis et al. (1977), who noted that groups of Asian, West Indian, and European adolescents with vitamin D deficiency and living in England showed marked and comparable increases respectively in serum 25-OHD concentrations during the spring and summer months (March to October). Such debunking studies are not really necessary. By simple observation in the “Natural World”: nature itself demonstrates the lie of the Vitamin D nonsense. Rightwing Religions: Where Do They Come From?

South Africa’s rightwing religions originated historically from a British movement dating from the nineteenth century. The British Israel movement expounded the theory that the British were the real descendants of Biblical Israel and thus God’s only chosen people.
