American Jews played a significant role in the founding and funding of some of the most important civil rights organizations, including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). In 1909, Henry Moscowitz joined W.E.B. DuBois and other civil rights leaders to found the NAACP. Kivie Kaplan, a vice-chairman of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (now the Union for Reform Judaism), served as the national president of the NAACP from 1966 to 1975. Arnie Aronson worked with A. Philip Randolph and Roy Wilkins to found the Leadership Conference.
From 1910 to 1940, more than 2,000 primary and secondary schools and twenty black colleges (including Howard, Dillard and Fisk universities) were established in whole or in part by contributions from Jewish philanthropist Julius Rosenwald. At the height of the so-called “Rosenwald schools,” nearly forty percent of southern blacks were educated at one of these institutions.
During the Civil Rights Movement, Jewish activists represented a disproportionate number of whites involved in the struggle.
…The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 were drafted in the conference room of Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, under the aegis of the Leadership Conference, which for decades was located in the RAC’s building.
The Jewish community has continued its support of civil rights laws addressing persistent discrimination in voting, housing and employment against not only women and people of color but also in the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community and the disabled community.

Particularly interesting is the fact that the fledgling organization (NAACP) learned to harness the power of publicity through its 1915 battle against D. W. Griffith’s inflammatory Birth of a Nation, a motion picture that perpetuated demeaning stereotypes of African Americans and glorified the Ku Klux Klan.

Meanwhile, Haaretz reminds us that KKK members sought liberation from the yoke of Reconstruction that the North forced upon the South.
To perpetrate their vicious acts, they dressed up as animals, Indians, women and even as blacks, smearing their faces with burned cork like the minstrels, which allowed them to point an accusing finger directly at the victims.
None of them wore a robe and hood, “because they didn’t need to”…The authorities ignored the acts of lynching: In fact, their representatives took part in them actively.
The perpetrators included a former governor, a judge, a mayor, a sheriff, a district attorney, a lawyer and a banker – the pillars of the community.
The Ku Klux Klan got the full Hollywood treatment, with members of the organization appearing in white robes and hoods with eye slits. The tremendous success of “The Birth of a Nation” provided free advertising and also inspired the standardized garb of the organization’s members from that moment on. Within five years, 100,000 new members joined the organization.
Not everyone could be in the FBI or CIA, not everyone could be a general, a Supreme Court Chief Justice, a network executive, a major publisher or a mob boss. But just about anyone in the all-white FBI, CIA, Supreme Court and Mafia could be a member of the KKK. And many were, particularly Klansmen recruited in Masonic lodges.

Southern Jews who adhered to the social norms mostly were spared anti-Semitism, which race more important than religion, for Jews being white, led to increased social acceptance and minimal anti-Semitism.
In America with the promise of religious freedom, race as opposed to religion divided society and nowhere was that more true in the South were slavery reign and even the poorest of whites saw their social status rise by virtue of their whiteness.
Supporting the slavery and then the Confederacy was ticket to that acceptance for Jews living in the South and they took advantage of everything their whiteness could offer them in America.
